Quills - Tying In

Alright boys, I'm going to go ahead and do the red quills.
Soaking/softening them for 10-20 minutes before starting to use them is a given, along with the tight touching wraps, even using 2 quills (1/3 and 2/3 diameter) for #12s or even #14's.
Like E/G I've spilled the water cup a couple of times. I find a moist paper towel after the initial soak works good.
What is the best method for initially tying in the quill in order to prevent bulk when you wrap back over the tied in/anchored portion (starting right behind the wing tie in point?), and how do you finish off the anchoring when you approach the bend (keep it pointing straight back or try and get an angle on the last few wraps?
Thanks.

I personally tie in as little as possible.Maybe midway between the wing and the end of the shank. This will also help with the bulk. On my dries I like to tie the concave towards the shank, this will give you a slight ridge when wound. Polish taper the body as you prob. know. Now is when I give the body a brush of Krazy Glue and wind it up.I cut straight across the quill keeping the end square, and finishing flat down. I usually have to use a finger nail to hold it down while i tie it off. It's easy dude. 3-4 and you'll be cranking them out.

Thanks for all of your input boys. The red quill 14's turned out real nice. I turned out a dozen pretty quickly and didn't even spill the cup the quills soaked in!
One of my bud's wanted 12's too, and I'm not too thrilled about how they turned out which goes to what you guys were saying about not going bigger than 14.
I've got some good quill "butts" left over and am looking forward to trying some of those good looking nymphs that E/G posted. Thinking a pheasant tail might be good for the color of the butts I've got.
Thanks again guys, another arrow in the quiver. Will let you know how they produce after the WCC trip in May.

Hello there kjf,
Don't throw the quill butts out they make great wing buds for all types of patterns.

Same here. I tie in as little as possible and try to wrap as tight as possible. Hard to describe, but I find that the quill actually works itself into place. Some people use their thumbnail to work it in, but I don't, just my method. I haven't really given it much of a shot on dries, but they make killer nymphs. The fished seemed to agree with them today.
I am guilty of trying to roll cast with my mouse at work.
