I don't think backward flies are needed at all. I've seen a lot of big hatches in the Catskills and
if there isn't any wind, most of the flies are facing downstream. Maybe when the wind is blow around you
may see them oriented upstream and sideways for that matter. One thing I've noticed is that there are a lot
of cripples floating down. That's why I like using emergers up and down stream, caddis especially down on a swing.
