East Branch/Willow- 5/17/2018

18 May 2018 - 03:20 PM

Tough day both rivers were unusually high, but wadeable in spots.Very warm -80 degrees and sunny to partly cloudy. The East Branch was "bug soup" all day Some risers in the early afternoon.Fish were difficult to get to.Hooked one fish on a Hendrickson spinner which ended in a long distance release. No fish working in the afternoon despite the water being literally covered with duns ,spinners and caddis. Spent the last two hours on the Willow- two browns on a green x-caddis, but not a lot happening. Hopefully we won't get much rain over the next few days and the water levels will settle down.

Cloudy with a threat of t- storms later in the day(it poured for a half hour around 5:30. We made back to the car as soon as we heard thunder)Very good day. Lots of caddis bouncing around, baetis, blue quills and some Hendricksons. It looked like a pretty heavy spinner fall eas going to happen, but the storm chased them back into the trees. We had sporadicly rising fish for most of the afternoon and even a few after the rain stopped. Landed some very nice fish on a variety of flies, but a hendrickson dun seemed to work best.

Willow 5/8/2018

09 May 2018 - 07:35 PM

Started late around 1:30 .Air temp 70 ,water temp 56. Partly cloudy. Tons of bugs-quill Gordon's ,hendricksons blue quills ,baetis ,chimarra caddis even some Hendrickson spinners. Fish were rising intermittently,no steady feeding patterns. Managed two nice browns on a ,one one a blue quill emerger (#16) and one on a bearish emerger(#18). Miss two or three fish, for the most part they were ignoring my hendricksons. Fished until 8:00,some spinners in the air,but I didn't see them on the water. Another beautiful day in the Catskills.

Willow/Beaverkill -9/12/17

13 September 2017 - 03:15 AM

Warm day -75 after a cold 52 degree start. Managed two nice 14" browns on a cricket and a # 14 black ant on th Willow. Moved to lower no kill on the Beaverkill in the afternoon and picked up a bunch of 11" rainbows(stockers??) on a #16 dark brown iris caddis. Back to the Willow for the evening and a mix of different size and different color flying ants--not a lot of ant but I believe the fish were feeding on them. Can't prove it because I tried several varieties of fly ants, but no success. It was a gorgeous day to be on the river

It turned cold, water temps stayed below 65all day.,air temps mid -60s .Partly cloudy, some drizzle for about an hour in the morning. Fished with my 11 year old granddaughter. Nothing doing in the morning, some fish started working sporadically around 5 , we managed three small browns with a bumblebee pattern and three fish on a #18 black caddis emerger and two browns on a # 20 zebra midge . Always a great day any day on the stream with her.
